Carpets can trap dirt, dust, and odors, making your home feel less fresh and inviting. Commercial carpet cleaners often contain harsh chemicals that may irritate sensitive skin or trigger allergies. Creating your own carpet cleaner with essential oils offers a natural, effective way to refresh your carpets while adding a pleasant scent to your living space. I have created my own carpet cleaner using baking soda and essential oils for a fresh floral scent.
Why Use Essential Oils for Carpet Cleaning
Essential oils are extracted essences from nature and carry natural antibacterial, antifungal, and deodorizing properties. When added to carpet cleaning solutions, they can help to kill germs, and leave behind a refreshing aroma. Unlike most synthetic fragrances, essential oils provide a clean scent without harmful chemicals.
Some popular essential oils for a carpet cleaning scent include:
Lavender: Calming scent, antibacterial
Tea Tree: Antimicrobial, fights mold and mildew
Lemon: Natural degreaser, brightens carpets
Eucalyptus: Antiseptic, freshens air
Peppermint: Invigorating scent, repels insects
Using essential oils in your carpet cleaner not only improves cleanliness but also supports a healthier home environment.
As we're moving towards Spring Season, I chose Lavender Essential Oil and Rose Otto Essential Oil for the DIY carpet cleaner.
Baking Soda and Essential Oil Carpet Freshener
For a dry option that deodorizes and refreshes, this baking soda mix is ideal.
Ingredients
1 cup baking soda
15 drops lavender essential oil
15 drops rose otto essential oil
Instructions
Mix baking soda and essential oils in a bowl.
Let the mixture sit in the bowl for 30 minutes.
Sprinkle evenly over carpet.
Let sit for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for strong odors.
Vacuum thoroughly to remove baking soda and trapped dirt.
This method is perfect for routine carpet maintenance and odor control.
Tips for Using DIY Carpet Cleaners Safely
Always test any cleaner on a small, hidden patch of carpet before full application.
Use essential oils sparingly; too much can cause staining or irritation.
Store homemade cleaners in labeled containers away from children and pets.
Vacuum carpets regularly to maintain cleanliness and prolong freshness.
Benefits of Making Your Own Carpet Cleaner
Cost-effective: Homemade cleaners cost less than commercial products.
Non-toxic: Free from harsh chemicals, considered safer for children and pets (as long as carpet cleaner mixture is thoroughly vacuumed and does not come in contact with children and pets).
Customizable scents: Choose essential oils that suit your preferences.
Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste and chemical runoff.
Effective: Natural ingredients work well on stains and odors.
