When its Flu season, alot of us catch the bad cold especially if our immune systems are down. The Flu comes with sore throat, runny nose, headache, fever and congestion. Essential oils have been used for many years to help combat alot of these symptoms. We explore those oils which target the congestion and by extension runny nose and sore throat. These essential oils have expectorant properties which actually thin out and expel mucus.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
One of the most popular essential oils for nasal congestion, Eucalyptus Essential Oil is a great expectorant oil to loosen mucus and reduce possible bronchial infections.

Apply a few drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil to a bowl of steaming water, close your eyes and cover your head with a clean towel, then inhale the vapors to losen mucus.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Massage 2-3 drops (along with a carrier oil) onto chest or drop 5 drops of the essential oil into a humidifier or diffuser to help clear sinus and lung congestion.
Rosemary Essential Oil
Besides assisting with bronchial and breathing issues, Rosemary essential oil can also assist with nasal congestion, as it is also a strong mint oil and softens mucus in the nose. Make a blend with Rosemary and Eucalyptus essential oils in a humidifier.
Diffuser Blend
2 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
3 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Rosemary can also be blended with Lavender for headaches that may come on with sinusitis and congestion.
There are other essential oils that help with nasal congestion such as tea tree, lavender and clary sage. In a 2015 lab study, clary sage was found to have antimicrobial properties.
If you do not have a diffuser, humidifier or means of producing a steam, you can simply add a few drops of any of the above mentioned oils on a tissue or handkerchief, then breathe deeply, taking care not to have the material touch your skin with the essential oils, as it may cause irritation.

Avoid using these essential oils on babies that are younger than 3 months. However, consult with your doctor regarding using essential oils on young children, as some allergies can be triggered essential oils.
